The options for surviving as primary are pretty much the same across race and have more to do with your ship, fitting, fleet composition (do you have enough logis?) and the dynamics of the engagement.

Gallente is somewhat gimped, so you're in luck. That being said Oneiros is a good logi and Lachesis/Arazu are basically required for any serious ranged gang.

Amarr have been FOTM in sov warfare for years. The most popular PvP battleship is the Abaddon, thanks to it's 8 turret slots and resist bonus. Zealots are the standard for armor HACs and sniper HACs. You'll never be turned away from an armor gang flying a Zealot. Curse and Pilgrim used to be fairly popular for solo roaming, but really all recons are good, regardless of race. Their solo pwnboat commandship is terrible (IMO) but the booster commandship is the standard for armor gangs and has a crazy tank on it (better than any battleship).
Caldari just came off a cycle as FOTM in the form of Drake Armies. The Nighthawk is decent as far as solo pwnboats go. Their HACs are basically a trainwreck. Once again, their recons are good for what they do, but all recons are.

Amarr at the T2 level have the Zealot, the Guardian, their recons and the Damnation. The Archon is the best combat carrier (triage or Pantheon) thanks to it's resist bonus, crazy cap recharge and armor/energy transfer. The Revelation used to be the #1 dread, not that it's worth much now (since dreads have been overshadowed by supercarriers).

Right now big fleets are fairly evenly split between shield tanking (Maelstroms) and armor tanking (Abaddons).
